The weather was the focus of the pre-event Press Conference at the British GP, and Friday’s changeable weather did little to disappoint the hype. With mostly fine skies threatening rain, FP1 at Silverstone saw Suzuki’s Maverick Viñales take the top spot, with the Spaniard posting the fastest lap in the last few minutes of the session.
Yamaha’s Jorge Lorenzo was second in the morning, ahead of Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez, who took a tumble at Turn 12, but was uninjured.
FP2 saw all the grid improve their lap times, and Ducati’s Andrea Iannone led for a lot of the second with Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa just behind the Italian on the timesheets before the shootout began as the clock ticked down towards zero.
Viñales was the first to set an all-red sector lap to take back the top spot, before LCR Honda’s Cal Crutchlow struck.
However, Iannone pounced again at the death and finished the day in top spot, with Viñales finishing in second and home hero Crutchlow in third.
Reigning champion Lorenzo was fourth, with Marquez finishing in fifth. Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi was sixth with Ducati’s Andrea Dovizioso behind his compatriot in seventh. Suzuki’s Aleix Espargaro was eighth fastest by the end of the second session, ahead of Pedrosa in ninth and local rider Scott Redding in tenth.
