Movistar Yamaha’s Valentino Rossi took a dramatic victory under the Catalan sun this afternoon, beating Marc Marquez in a final laps thriller, as reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo was taken out by Andrea Iannone with nine laps to go.
Lorenzo was able to get a stunning start off the line and took an early lead in the opening laps, closely followed by the Repsol Honda team-mates of Marquez and Dani Pedrosa, Rossi was down in eighth position.
Unable to fully pull away from his compatriot, Lorenzo was keeping a solid lead over the field which he was able to hold for the opening six laps of the 25 lap race. Marquez continued to hold his fight for the victory as Rossi was battling with Maverick Vinales who was making some bold moves in the opening laps aboard his Escstar Suzuki.
Setting the fastest laps early on in the race it was clear Rossi had the pace to get to the front and fight for the victory, and by the fifth lap he was up into third position.
In an uncharacteristic form, Lorenzo was unable to keep a hold of his lead and his team-mate was soon able to take the lead from Lorenzo. Once Rossi hit the lead he was able to pull ahead and take charge of the race.
However he was unable to shake off the Repsol Honda of Marquez, but drama was even further down the field as Andrea Iannone hit the back end of Jorge Lorenzo’s M1 in sixth position and both riders were out of the race, meaning Marquez took the championship lead this weekend.
The closing laps saw Marquez make a move on Rossi but the Italian was quick to respond, making the same move on Marquez a lap later heading into the first corner. Seeming to be struggling aboard his Honda, Marquez backed off in the final lap and a half, thinking of the championship points and Rossi crossed the line with a second and a half lead.
Dani Pedrosa rounded out the podium as all riders payed their respects to Luis Salom.
