Former World Champion Tom Sykes left the rest of the field for dust as he won race one in Malaysia by over five seconds.

After taking pole position with a stunning pace this morning, it was clear he was the man to beat on his Kawasaki Racing team machine. There was plenty of action on the opening lap but Sykes soon took the lead from Pata Yamaha’s Alex Lowes and never looked back.

KRT team-mate and reigning champion Jonathan Rea was up into second position, closely followed by championship rival Chaz Davies aboard the Ducati. However he was able to break away in the closing laps and finish a lonley second.

As the race began to look like a procession, the battle for fourth lit up and Jordi Torres was able to secure a top four ahead of Lowes. Rookie Marcus Reiterburger was locked the battle but was forced to retire on lap 12 of 16 with his Althea BMW machine.

Jonathan Rea now leads the championship by 39 points ahead of Davies. Race two takes place tomorrow morning.
