Reigning world Champion Jorge Lorenzo dominated the first session of 2016 at the Losail International circuit, finishing 0.276s ahead of Movistar Yamaha team-mate Valentino Rossi.

Repsol Honda’s Marc Marquez was the first rider to sit at the top of the session with surprisingly fast lap times being set early on in the session with the new Michelin tyres.

Doubts overshadowed the beginning of the session as riders were apprehensive to go out on the new tyres after the Moto2 session, with Dunlop rubber being laid down by the Moto3 and Moto2 machines. However this didn’t seem to affect the riders and lap times were only 0.4s slower than those set in FP1 in 2015.

It didn’t take long for Lorenzo to cement his place at the top of the timing screens, and with half an hour to go he set the first 1.55 lap time and was unable to be caught despite Hector Barbera and Andrea Iannone’s best efforts.

In the closing 17 minutes of the session most riders entered the pits as they prepared for the final stint of the day, but it looked as if Lorenzo would be a hard man to beat.

Iannone and Barbera put in phenomenal lap times to sit in second and third until the final seven minutes until Rossi jumped up into third position and 0.07s off Lorenzo.

Monster Tech 3 Yamaha’s Bradley Smith became the first crasher of the 2016 season as he lost the rear of his M1 at turn 13 in the desert, but was luckily able to walk away in 11th position.

Despite being on top Lorenzo didn’t sit back and relax, he improved on his time on his final two laps, first by 0.178 and took another 0.075s off his time at the flag.

Rossi also improved on his final lap as he jumped up into second position with a lap time of 1.55.707, pushing compatriot Iannone down to third ahead of Barbera as Vinales completed the top five.

Repsol Honda team-mates Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez finished in seventh and eighth, over half a second behind the factory Yamaha duo.
