Repsol Honda rookie Marc Marquez banished the spectre of Mugello with a stunning lap to take top spot in Free Practice 3 at a sunny and hot Barcelona this morning.

Monster Yamaha Tech3 man Cal Crutchlow opened proceedings with the fastest lap of the weekend some 0.2s faster than the best time of yesterday set by Valentino Rossi which set the tone nicely as almost all riders took to the circuit on soft front and rear Bridgestone tyres.
Reigning World Champion Jorge Lorenzo didn’t have the best of starts to the sessions as he lost the front of his Yamaha M1 on the entry to turn 5, thankfully without injury or too much damage to his number one bike and made it back to the garage, without losing too much time, to continue on his second bike.
Marquez team mate Dani Pedrosa, sporting a special design Arai helmet for this weekend as is Marquez with his Shoei and Lorenzo with his HJC, made his mark on the session with the first sub 1:42 lap with a masterful lap of 1:41.987s ahead of Crutchlow, Lorenzo, Rossi, Hayden, Bautista, Dovizioso, Marquez, Bradl and Espargaro.
In the pursuit of his team mate Marquez reached the maximum 61deg lean angle of the Bridgestone tyre round Turn 5 as he and everyone else threw in soft option tyres like an old style qualifying session to set a time that would secure a top ten place to go straight in to Q2 this afternoon and it was the reigning Moto2 World Champion who took it to the rest of the field with a stunning lap of 1:41.906s to snatch the fastest time from Pedrosa.
It was a difficult end to the session for the Avintia Bluesens squad as first Hiroshi Aoyama crashed out of the session with 3 minutes to go and as team mate Hector Barbera pulled up with a technical issue further round the same lap. The frantic final few minutes didn’t materialise as the riders in the top ten seemed confident that their times were enough to secure the all important Q2 place, although Nicky Hayden and his factory Ducati pulled a personal best lap of the year to take second spot with a lap of 1:41.916s. Just 0.5s covers the top eight ahead of the all-important Q2 this afternoon as Smith and Pirro go again in Q1 to try and take the final two places in the second session.
