Factory Team rider’s six consecutive front row start, making him the only rider to start from the top three positions in every round of 2013.
The Spaniard has finished in the top six in every free practice session of the weekend, and following a front-end crash at turn five in FP3 he was sixth in combined free practice, 0.687s behind Marquez in first. He then improved on his pace in FP4, securing the third fastest time of the session ahead of qualifying. In the limited time the riders have in Q2, the 26 year old suffered from clutch problems on his Yamaha M1 which lost him time in the 15 minute session after returning to the pits. With track temperatures soaring to 57 degrees, Lorenzo’s clutch problem didn’t hinder his qualifying position as he secured a front row start in third position with a time of 1.41.566, 0.673s behind Dani Pedrosa.
Despite starting from the front row, Lorenzo has a muted tone post-qualfying“I’m very disappointed because today we had a problem with the clutch in a crucial moment and this lap time was the best I could do. I also had not so much confidence on the front to make a perfect lap. We hope for race distance we can remain constant and fight for the win. We will need to be strong and concentrate for the whole race; we don’t know what can happen in the 20th lap.”
