MotoGP: Rossi tops FP2 at Barcelona

Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi topped the timesheets in blistering conditions in FP 2 for the GP of Catalunya at Barcelona this afternoon. The most popular non-Spaniard in the series took the plaudits with three minutes remaining after Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo had held top spot since lap three.

Perfect conditions greeted the riders as they began the session and it was Lorenzo that struck first in the session on a soft rear tyre, surpassing the time he set in the morning session on just lap three with a time of 1:42.346s. Dovizioso and Rossi followed suit holding the second and third best times ahead of Crutchlow and Bradl in fifth. Sadly soon after, Turn 10 claimed its first crash after sucking in Pedrosa, Espargaro, Hayden and Pesek without incident in the morning session as Bradl lost he front in to the left-hander as he trailed the brake on entry.
After their cat and mouse antics of the morning session when Pedrosa followed Lorenzo for a lap before Lorenzo’s pit board notified him and he immediately sat up, letting his rival past and immediately then jumped on his tail after. Pedrosa didn’t manage to best his time from the morning session as most of the session was spent on the harder compound Bridgestone rear tyre, which is more likely to be used in the race on Sunday but still managed to post the third best time with this mornings effort.
Marquez joined the sub 1:43 second club after following Pedrosa for two laps enabling to better his time from the morning, unlike Cal Crutchlow who despite his best efforts couldn’t better his FP1 time in the hotter temperatures of FP2.
Whilst Crutchlow and Marquez were having their issues, the fourth fastest of the Spaniards Alvaro Bautista took fourth place aboard his Gresini Honda, looking got make amends for his early exit from the Italian Grand Prix two weeks ago
The available Bridgestone tyres will be a bigger factor than usual this weekend as Barcelona basks in the hottest weekend of the year and one that could  have a big bearing on the outcome of the race come Sunday. Who can look after their tyres best over race distance will take the spoils, which points to Lorenzo; however should the front runners still be together come the last five laps then Rossi is the master of worn tyre pace as he proved in Qatar at Round 1 but do we count out Pedrosa and Marquez? This is a ‘Yamaha’ track after all…like Jerez. Where it was almost as hot. And Pedrosa won.
