Lorenzo: "The track is working well for us this year"

Jorge Lorenzo has said he is happy after finishing the first day at Mugello on top of the timesheets although he’s keen to point out he is awaiting improvements from his rivals (presumably Honda) and tricky weather

conditions.

The Spaniard pipped team mate Valentino Rossi to the top of the second timed practice session in the closing stages. This morning, Lorenzo, like many other riders opted not to venture out onto the Italian circuit on slick tyres towards the end of a mostly damp session. After scoring his worst result since Valencia 2008 in Le Mans in wet conditions, it’s understandable the Mallorcan is concerned about the wet weather forecast over the weekend. Lorenzo and Rossi spent almost the whole second practice session duelling for the top spot with Tech 3 Yamaha’s Cal Crutchlow not far behind in first. Honda, who have had a somewhat dominant start to the season taking three wins out of the first four races, seem to be struggling in Italy with Pedrosa down in 5th and Marquez in 14th after a 200mph crash saw him taken to the medical centre.

Lorenzo said: “In the morning it was wet and bad conditions so we preferred to not exit at the end of FP1 with the slick tyres as we thought the track was dangerous. We had to wait for the afternoon and dry conditions. From the beginning the Yamaha riders were very strong and competitive which means the track is working well for us this year. We have to wait for the improvement of our rivals and the possible change in weather that can change our performance but for the moment we are very competitive and happy.”
