The first free practice session of the 5th round of the World Superbike Championship from a wet and windy Donington Park saw very little action, with only five riders setting lap times throughout the session. Chaz Davies ventured of his pit box after ten minutes along with the likes of Giugliano, Badovini and Iannuzzo to complete a few laps before all swiftly returning to the comfort of their pit boxes.
Davies sat at the top of the standings for the rest of the session with a 1m 53.943s lap time. Canepa, Checa, Iannuzzo and Neukirchner were the only other riders for the proceeding ten minutes to venture out on track, all setting times around the two minute mark.
Davide Giugliano crashed his RSV4 Aprilia with twenty minutes to go without even setting a flying lap.
Shortly after, there was a brief appearance on track by Niccolo Canepa who is wildcarding on a Ducati 1098R due to the Euro STK1000 championship (of which he currently leads) not being present at the Leicestershire circuit this weekend. Vittorio Iannuzzo also put in a few more laps on his Grillini BMW S1000RR; Iannuzzo and Canepa were unable to challenge Davies’ steady lap from the beginning of the session.
Fixi Crescent Suzuki rider Leon Camier braved the conditions and went out on track for a leisurely ride round with three minutes to go, returning to the pits almost immediately. Camier is still recovering from the knee injury he sustained in Aragón over a month ago and hopes he will be able to give 100% in Sunday’s race.
No other riders made it out of their pit boxes in FP1, a good choice considering the conditions.
Hopefully there will be significantly more action later on today for Q1…
