Moto2 Test: Espargaro remains fastest as rain hits Jerez

Pol Espargaro’s dry time from Wednesday, a 1m 42.332, remained unchallenged as mixed conditions on the final day at Jerez meant no faster times were set. In the final session of the day only two riders ventured on to the track in the rain.
The best overall times all came from day two with Espargaro fastest for Tuenti HP 40 on the Pons Kalex both here and at the Valencia test, so far setting him up as the man to beat in 2013 after being runner-up last season.
Nico Terol, who set the fastest wet time on day one, was again quickest in the rain for Aspar on the final day with a lap of 1m 54.860, while Scott Redding worked on the handling of the Marc VDS bike in the wet, an area where the machine struggled last year, and was second today. The test was a big success for Redding as his dry time placed him third fastest for the entire test. Thursday’s third place man was Danny Kent, who has struggled to show his winning form in the dry for Tech3 but mastered the soggy conditions.
As with Moto3, only 20 riders set a time in the wet with notable performances from reluctant wet weather specialist Ant West who was tenth fastest for QMMF, improvement for British rookie Kyle Smith who finished the day eleventh and Mike Di Meglio, the sole MotoBI user in 13th.

The last of the official pre-season Moto2 tests will be held once again in Jerez from March 18-21, when the official race engines will become available.
